Actions Speak Louder Campaign Thanks Senator VoinovichStatement from Executive Director Deepak Bhargava onSenator Voinovich’s Stance on President Bush’s Proposed Budget (Washington, DC) Today, the Actions Speak Louder campaign launches a petition drive to thank Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) for his courage in standing up to his party and fighting against the irresponsible tax cuts included in President Bush’s recent budget proposal. The petition drive, on the www.ActionsSpeakLouder.org website, encourages other senators to follow Senator Voinovich’s example. “This budget is about more than just tax breaks and program cuts—it radically alters the priorities of the nation as well as the social contract between the government and its people. By driving four years of tax cuts that have drained the government of its revenue, this administration has laid the groundwork for the long-term fiscal starvation of services upon which most Americans rely,” said Executive Director Deepak Bhargava, Center for Community Change. “We applaud the Senator’s courage in opposing a budget that reflects the wrong priorities for our country.” The campaign led by the Center for Community Change, the nation’s leading organizing nonprofit for social and economic justice working in low income communities, ran television ads aimed at ‘red’ state voters and launched a website and blog to spark a dialogue on whether President Bush’s budget lives up to the rhetoric of compassion and strong moral values on which he campaigned. The Actions Speak Louder campaign, led by the Center for Community Change, is an effort to hold President Bush accountable for his budget decisions and the priorities they reflect. The campaign will raise awareness, spark grassroots action and start a dialogue with people in ‘red’ states as to whether the President’s budget reflects the moral values he espouses.
