"Actions Speak Louder”Statement from Executive Director Deepak Bhargava onPresident Bush’s State of the Union (Washington, DC) “This evening’s State of the Union address is another example of the disconnect between President Bush’s words and the reality of our situation. President Bush has demonstrated that we must look past his words and instead hold him accountable for his actions. “For millions of Americans, the real state of the union is one in which we are all less and less secure as we struggle to meet our economic needs. While it is certainly true that we now face a deficit that cannot go unaddressed, the reality is that this crisis was created in large part by four years of massive tax cuts that benefited only an elite few at the expense of the rest of us. And now, rather than undoing those tax cuts for millionaires, the President plans to try to balance the budget on the backs of ordinary families across the country. “Had President Bush chosen to match his words to his actions, he would have described the true state of the union as one that includes funding cuts for programs that help families with health insurance, housing, child care and college tuition – to name just a few. But once again, the President’s actions speak louder than his words.” The Actions Speak Louder campaign, led by the Center for Community Change, is an effort to hold President Bush accountable for his budget decisions and the priorities they reflect. The campaign will raise awareness, spark grassroots action and start a dialogue with people in ‘red’ states as to whether the President’s budget reflects the moral values he espouses.
